How to Clean a Stainless Steel Travel Cup
The best way to clean a stainless steel travel cup is simple: rinse it soon after use, wash every drink-contact part with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and let the pieces dry separately.
The sooner you clean it, the easier the job will be. Water may only need a quick rinse, but coffee, matcha, milk, protein and supplements can settle around the lid, straw and silicone seals. Leaving that residue until tomorrow is usually what creates stubborn smells and dried-on build-up.
Follow your cup’s care instructions because dishwasher safety, coatings and electronic parts vary. Revo requires hand washing and its electronic base must not be submerged or rinsed.
Here is a practical routine that keeps stainless steel drinkware fresh without turning cleaning into another job.
The everyday cleaning routine
For most drinks, follow these five steps:
- Empty the cup as soon as you have finished.
- Rinse it with warm water before residue dries.
- Wash the cup, lid and removable drink-contact parts with mild dishwashing liquid.
- Use a soft sponge, bottle brush or straw brush to reach corners and narrow openings.
- Rinse thoroughly, then leave every part open and separate until completely dry.
Warm water and dishwashing liquid are usually enough. Avoid closing the lid while damp because trapped moisture can create a stale smell.
Do not assume every cup is dishwasher-safe. Heat and detergent may affect finishes, seals, silicone or electronics.
Plain water may only need a rinse during the day, but regularly wash the mouthpiece, straw and seal.
Clean the cup according to what you drank
Different drinks leave different residue, so adjust the routine to the contents.
A quick rinse now usually saves a deeper clean later.
Water and electrolytes
Plain water is the simplest. Rinse the cup, lid and straw, then let them dry fully.
Electrolytes and flavoured hydration powders need a proper wash. Sweeteners, flavouring and colour can remain around the straw, drinking opening or lid thread even when the cup looks empty.
Coffee, tea and matcha
Coffee and tea can leave a brown film. Matcha can collect around lid grooves and seals where residue is less obvious.
Rinse these drinks soon after use, then wash with warm soapy water and a soft brush or sponge. Pay attention to the base of the cup and the underside of the lid.
Milk, protein and collagen
Milk-based drinks and protein deserve prompt cleaning. A small amount left around a seal, straw or thread can become unpleasant once it dries.
Rinse the cup as soon as practical, even if you cannot wash it immediately. At the end of the day, separate the removable pieces and clean every surface that touched the drink.
Collagen may look cleanly dissolved, but residue can remain around drinking openings.
We have not noticed staining or odour in our Revo prototypes after almost a year of regular use. Our usual routine is uncomplicated: warm soapy water after use and cleaning the straw whenever it is used. Prompt, consistent cleaning matters more than a complicated ritual.
Clean the lid, straw and silicone seals
The stainless steel body is often the easiest part to clean. Lids, straws and seals are where residue tends to hide.
Separate every manufacturer-approved removable component, which may include:
- the straw
- a sliding or rotating drinking insert
- silicone gaskets or seals
- a mouthpiece
- a magnetic mixer
- a removable carry strap
Wash each piece with warm soapy water. Use a narrow brush because rinsing alone may not clean a straw’s inner wall.
Inspect the underside of the lid, the thread and the channel where a silicone seal sits. If the seal is removable, take it out periodically for a deeper clean. Note its direction before removal so it can be fitted correctly again.
You need not dismantle every seal after water, but cups used for coffee, matcha, protein or milk need periodic deeper lid cleaning.
Let all the parts dry separately. Reassembling a damp lid can trap moisture in places you cannot see.
How to remove stains and lingering smells
If ordinary dishwashing liquid does not remove a stain or smell, start with the gentlest deeper clean.
Fill the stainless steel cup with warm water and add a small amount of bicarbonate of soda. Let it soak for up to an hour, then use a soft bottle brush or sponge. Rinse thoroughly and wash it again with mild dishwashing liquid.
For a lid or removable silicone seal, a warm-water and bicarbonate-of-soda soak can help loosen residue. Follow the cup manufacturer’s instructions, particularly if the lid contains unusual materials or fixed electronic parts.
Do not combine cleaning products. One simple method followed by thorough rinsing is enough.
Repeat the soak if necessary rather than switching immediately to a metal scourer or harsh chemical. A persistent odour often means residue remains under a gasket, inside a straw or around a drinking mechanism. Inspect those areas before soaking the steel body again.
Replace a damaged or distorted seal where spares are available because wear may affect closure.
What not to use on stainless steel drinkware
The wrong cleaning method can scratch stainless steel or affect its corrosion resistance.
Avoid:
- steel wool, metal brushes and abrasive scourers
- chlorine bleach and chloride-containing cleaners
- hydrochloric acid cleaners
- harsh powders that scratch the finish
- leaving salty or strongly acidic cleaning mixtures in the cup for long periods
- using sharp tools to scrape residue from seals
- storing the cup sealed while it is wet
Metal scourers can leave scratches and may deposit iron particles that later appear as rust marks. Chloride-containing cleaners, including bleach, can contribute to staining or pitting on stainless steel.
Use a soft sponge or brush and dishwashing liquid. Avoid aggressive scrubbing on painted or soft-touch exteriors.
How to clean a Revo self-mixing cup
Revo’s quick-clean method uses the cup’s own vortex:
- Add about 200 ml of warm water to the steel cup.
- Add a small dash or drop of dishwashing liquid.
- Press the button and run one 30-second mixing cycle.
- Twist off and remove the electronic base.
- Rinse and hand wash the stainless steel cup.
- Leave the parts separate until completely dry.
The magnetic mixer can remain inside during the everyday warm-soapy-water cycle. Remove it periodically for a deeper clean so you can wash the mixer and the surface beneath it with a soft sponge.
The Revo Cup is hand wash only, although its removable straw can go in the dishwasher. The silicone seals can also be removed for a deeper hand wash. Refit them carefully before using the cup again.
The electronic base is splash-protected, not submersible. Make sure the silicone cover is firmly closed over the USB-C charging port during everyday use.
Wipe the base with a dry or slightly damp cloth when needed. Do not rinse it under the tap, put it in a dishwasher, submerge it or leave it sitting in water.
For a quick clean, run one vortex cycle with warm water and a drop of dishwashing liquid. Remove the base before rinsing the cup.
The cycle does not replace rinsing or cleaning the lid, straw and seals.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I wash a stainless steel travel cup?
Wash it after drinks containing coffee, tea, matcha, milk, protein, collagen, electrolytes or flavouring. If it only held water, rinse it after use and give the cup, lid and straw a regular proper wash.
Can a stainless steel travel cup go in the dishwasher?
Only if its manufacturer says it can. Vacuum insulation, exterior coatings, seals and electronic parts vary. The Revo Cup is hand wash only, with the exception of its removable straw.
Why does my clean travel cup still smell?
Residue may be hiding under a silicone seal, inside the straw, in the lid thread or around the mouthpiece. Dismantle the approved removable parts, clean them separately and let everything dry before reassembly.
How do I remove coffee stains from stainless steel?
Try warm water with bicarbonate of soda for up to an hour. Use a soft sponge or bottle brush, then rinse thoroughly and wash with dishwashing liquid. Avoid bleach and abrasive metal scourers.
Can I run soapy water through a self-mixing cup?
Only follow the product’s own instructions. Revo can run one 30-second cycle with about 200 ml of warm water and a drop of dishwashing liquid. Remove the electronic base before rinsing the steel cup.
Keep the routine simple
Cleaning a stainless steel travel cup should not require a cupboard full of products. Rinse it promptly, use warm soapy water, clean the small removable parts and let everything dry before putting it back together.
For coffee, matcha, milk and protein, the most useful habit is cleaning today rather than soaking tomorrow. Revo’s one-cycle quick clean makes the inside easier to deal with, but the same basic rule still applies: look after the lid, straw, seals and base as carefully as the steel cup.
